The use of symbols
Symbols are used as a pictorial representation of the written word, they are concrete and meaningful and aid understanding. At Tettenhall Wood School we provide a Total Communication Environment which means that a pupil will have the means to communicate wherever they are around school. Symbols are a huge part of this and we use symbols in many varied forms. Symbols are used in PECS books, communication books, Aided Language Displays (ALD’s) to support in lessons, to support general skills such as toileting etc. Symbols are used on the playground, for labelling around school and all staff wear a symbol key ring of the same symbols, providing access to a communication system for pupils at all times. Symbols used in general at Tettenhall Wood School are Mayer Johnson symbols, we also use Pictures for Pecs symbols.
